Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Public Schools provides special education and related services to eligible children and youth with disabilities, from ages 3 to 21. Services are provided in all schools and at various community and agency sites. In some cases, we provide services through other school districts or by approved outside agencies through inter-local service agreements

Preschoolers and students are identified and provided appropriate special education services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The student's parent(s) and a team of professionals together develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP). We then place students in the program best suited to deliver the services specified in their IEP. Children and youth with IEPs receive specially designed instruction and accommodations for their disability and related services such as speech or physical therapy if needed.

Children and youth, ages birth to 21, living in the Seattle School District, who are suspected of having a disability need to receive an evaluation from Seattle Public Schools to determine if they are eligible for special education services.

We were afraid to get our 3 year old evaluated.  But the early intervention our teacher, Faith Sadler, provided was out of this world.  If you have any worries about your child, I’d urge you to get an evaluation and an IEP from the school district.  Our son was so much better off that he no longer needs and IEP now that he’s in elementary school.  I just wish they weren't so quick to push kids out of special ed once they get part-way caught up.
