Alderwood Vision Therapy Center

Vision therapy is an individualized supervised treatment program designed to correct visual-motor and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies which have various causes, such as: stress, inadequate sensory-motor development, in some cases, contributing hereditary factors (i.e., crossed-eyes, wandering eyes, eye turns), and trauma to the nervous system (i.e., birth injury, brain trauma, closed head trauma, etc.).

Vision therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain's ability to control eye alignment, eye movements, focusing abilities, and eye teamwork (binocular vision). Visual-motor skills and endurance are developed through the use of specialized computer and optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters. During the final stages of therapy, the patient's newly acquired visual skills are reinforced and made automatic through repetition and by integration with motor and cognitive skills.

This was an outstanding evaluation of our children’s vision issues.  We had them evaluated at Children’s, who saw nothing the matter.  Meanwhile my baby got a flat head because his eyes weren’t able to track objects to the right.  Dr. T clearly diagnosed what was wrong, showed me the problem in a way that I was able to see and understand, and prescribed easy-to-do exercises at home that resolved the problem.

Vision therapy remains very controversial and expensive.  It wasn't for us.  We felt like this was a real racket and saw no benefits for our son.  We finally went to another pediatric developmental ophthalmologist for a second opinion.  He recommended glasses and this made a world of difference for us.  We also had concerns of conflict of interest (i.e., the professional who diagnoses the situation is the same professional who benefits from providing ongoing services).
